The measurements that decide everything.
In a small bathroom the layout is not a design preference, it is arithmetic. These are the standard clearances a bathroom is built around. Bring a tape measure and check your own before anybody quotes you.
From the toilet centre to any wall
The standard minimum each side. It is why a vanity two inches wider can make a toilet unusable, and why some layouts simply cannot move.
Clear space in front of the toilet
Measured from the front of the bowl to whatever is opposite. This is the one that quietly kills a layout somebody sketched on a napkin.
Standard vanity depths
Three inches sounds like nothing. In a compact bath it is the difference between a door that opens and a door that hits the vanity.
Usual door width
Its swing is a constraint on everything. If the door has to become a pocket or swing out, say so early, because it changes the framing.
Layout decides the price. Size barely does.
Two bathrooms with identical square footage can be very different jobs. What matters is whether anything has to move, and in a small room almost everything is against something else.
Whether the fixtures stay put
Toilet, vanity and shower where they already are is the efficient job. Swapping the positions of any two of them is plumbing work by the licensed trade and it changes the number materially.
The door and its swing
In a small bathroom the door is a real constraint. A vanity two inches deeper can stop it opening, so the scope is drawn against real measurements, not a showroom photo.
Tile height
Carrying tile up the wall makes a small room read finished and larger. It is the most visible money in the job and also the easiest line to adjust.
One trade at a time
Nobody can work around anybody else in a room this size, so the trades come in sequence. That is a scheduling fact, and it is why a small bathroom is not proportionally faster.

A written scope is only worth something if it says where it stops. These are the boundaries we put in writing before anyone starts.
How long the bathroom is out of use.
A small bathroom is out of use for the whole job, because there is no half of it to keep working. If it is the only bathroom in the house, say so at the walkthrough. It changes how we sequence the work and it belongs in the plan, not in a surprise.
When we tell you not to do it
Every company on your list will say yes to this job. Here is where we say no, and why. It costs us the odd project and it saves you a great deal more than that.

We will tell you honestly how long it will be unusable before you commit. If that does not work for your household, the answer might be to wait or to split the job, not to pretend it will be quicker.
You want to move the toilet three feet to gain a little room
In a small bathroom that is often most of the plumbing cost of the whole job, for a gain you stop noticing in a week. Sometimes it is worth it. Usually it is not, and we will say which one we think it is.
The budget only covers half the room properly
We would rather do the shower correctly and leave the vanity for later than spread the money thin across everything and waterproof nothing properly.

A warranty is only worth what its exclusions say. Ours are above, in the same size type as the promise. Ask any other company you are talking to for theirs in writing, and check how long the tile is covered for.
Questions we actually get asked
Does a small bathroom cost proportionally less?
No, and this is the most common surprise. The same trades come, the same waterproofing goes in, the same fixtures get set. What scales with size is the tile, and tile is rarely the biggest line.
What makes a small bathroom feel bigger?
Carrying the tile up the wall, a larger format on the floor with fewer grout lines, a glass panel instead of a curtain, and good light. None of those change a single dimension of the room.
Can you work if it is our only bathroom?
Yes, and we plan around it deliberately. The point is that the plan exists before we start, and you know which days are the hard ones.
Is a pedestal sink a good idea in a small bath?
It looks lighter and it costs you every bit of storage in the room. In a guest bath that nobody keeps anything in, it works well. In the bathroom your family actually uses, you will miss the cabinet.
How do I know if my layout can change at all?
Measure 15 inches from the centre of the toilet to each side and 21 inches clear in front of it. If you do not have that today, or would not have it after the change you are imagining, the layout is telling you something before anybody quotes it.
